Headline: Please Pass the Potassium!
Harvard researchers reported that men taking diuretic drugs may reduce their risk
of a stroke as much as 60 percent by taking potassium supplements. The eight-year study, published in a recent issue of
Circulation, included 43,738 male test subjects between the ages of 40 and 75.
According to the study, increased intake of dietary potassium and magnesium decreased the risk of
stroke in hypertensive men but not in men with no history of hypertension. The researchers suggested that doctors should
consider potassium supplementation for hypertensive men.

A year later, however, Tom develops severe depression because of the impotence that resulted from his diuretics. His doctor starts him on Prozac for that symptom. Prozac insures that Tom's sex life is over.
This 'shell game' of "hide the symptoms with drugs" continues on for a few more years
until Tom passes blood in his stool, and is diagnosed with colon cancer. Heartburn does not cause
colon cancer. But poor diet, stress, no excercise, and the toxic burden added to the side effects of
excessive medication can come crashing down after time in a life-threatening condition. It didn't have
to happen this way.
So what about antacids?
ATLANTA (Reuter) - One of the most common strains of salmonella is showing increasing signs of resistance to the antibiotics normally used to treat it, federal health officials said Thursday.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said salmonella typhimurium, which accounts for at least 24 percent of all reported salmonella cases, is growing increasingly drug-resistant.
The CDC said a rising proportion of salmonella typhimurium samples involve a strain usually resistant to five commonly used antibiotics -- ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, sulfonamides and tetracycline.
``In the past six or seven years this subtype has grown from being about seven percent of all salmonella typhimurium isolates that we've tested to almost 40 percent,'' Dr. Jeremy Sobel of the CDC's Division of Bacterial and Mycotic Diseases said.
``It is definitely increasing in incidence,'' Sobel said. ''It may be driving up the total number of illnesses.'' The drug-resistant strain caused an outbreak of diarrheal illness among school children in Nebraska last year. The source of the infection has not been determined.
Unlike the most common type of salmonella, the drug- resistant strain has been linked to sick farm animals and eating contaminated meat. It has been transmitted from cattle and sheep to people and has also been found in cats, wild birds, rodents, foxes and badgers.
In Britain, where the drug-resistant strain has been reported for more than a decade, 41 percent of people infected with the organism have required hospitalization and three percent have died. The more common form of salmonella, usually transmitted by eggs, causes far fewer deaths.
``This is a type of salmonella which appeared first in the United Kingdom in 1984 and it rapidly emerged and became the second most-common type of salmonella in the U.K.,'' Sobel said.
``The organism is acquiring even further resistance to
antibiotics which are commonly used for treating salmonella and
similar infections,'' he said.

GENEVA (Reuter) - More and more people are becoming sick from what they eat because of changing eating habits in favor of pre-prepared food from the supermarket or takeaways, the World Health Organization said Monday.
WHO also said at least 30 new infectious diseases with no known treatment, cure or vaccine had emerged in the past two decades and blamed the rapid increase in air travel, growth of megacities and inadequate safe water and sanitation.
It said smallpox had been eradicated but that diseases such as malaria, diptheria and yellow fever were making a comeback in the age of jet travel, slum cities and big population movements.
In a message to mark Monday's World Health Day, WHO said humanity's ancient battle with microbes had yet to be won with diseases of the past such as pneumonic plague reemerging and new bacteria and viruses eluding modern medicine.
AIDS emerged as a global disaster in the early 1980s and could affect nearly 30 million adults by 2000, WHO said. Mad cow disease may be another in the making, and also its incurable human form, the brain-wasting Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
WHO doctors also noted an increase in food-borne emerging infectious diseases such as salmonella and enterohemorrhagic E-coli, which causes bloody diarrhea, can be fatal especially in children and cause abortions in pregnant women in some cases.
``Bacterial and food-borne emerging infectious diseases are on the increase,'' Klaus Stohr, a doctor at WHO's emergency diseases unit, told Reuters.
``People don't have much time to cook their own food anymore,'' Stohr lamented. ``We are changing our eating habits. There is increased demand for pre-prepared food because we are getting more mobile and eating on the run.'' Stohr said global statistics for outbreaks of food-borne infectious diseases were not available because very few countries had successful surveillance systems.
The health food craze was also a factor to blame for the increase in food-borne diseases because unprocessed food contained less preservatives, Stohr said.
``People are turning to uncooked food, believing it's more healthy. But this is wrong,'' he said. ``There is a reason why we pasteurise our milk -- because raw milk can be contaminated if not treated properly.''
In 1996, 2.5 billion people crossed international borders aboard commercial flights. Another 25 million people have become refugees and millions more are migrant workers living abroad. ^REUTER@

What's more, the blend used in this study was the exact combination of extracts and concentrates
of Golden Neolife's "Flavonoid Complex". This gives powerful evidence of the
value of whole-food supplementation.
Actually, your body is protecting you against cancer every minute of every day.
Precancerous conditions are constantly present in healthy cells and tissues.
Yet whether or not the disease ever develops depends on a number of risk
factors, including oxidation reactions caused by daily exposure to cigarette
smoke, UV rays, and toxic chemicals in our air, food, and water. Years of
research show that a diet abundant in fruits and vegetables can interfere
with the development of cancer by increasing antioxidant levels and
maintaining healthy immune systems.
Another new test tube study, conducted at the University of Western
Ontario demonstrated addtional evidence of flavonoids' anti-cancer action.
Their studies showed that flavonoids in tangerines and grapefruits slow the
growth of certain cancer cells. Research also showed that another flavonoid
in orange juice may lead to fewer and smaller tumors.
Predominantly found in berries, green tea, citrus fruits, grapes, and
apples, flavonoids are one of the largest groups of dietary antioxidants.
Flavonoids act as "free radical scavengers", actually neutralizing these dangerously
destructive molecules. Scientists agree that oxidative damage cased by free
radicals may play a pivotal role in the onset of many diseases, including
cancer, and the best wayt to prevent oxidative damage is to increase our
daily intake of antioxidants, including flavonoids.
One example is the "French paradox" - despite the high level of fat
in the typical French diet, their incidence of heart disease is much lower
than scientists expected. Evidence now suggests that flavonoids in red
wine(a French dietary staple) actually protect them from heart disease. In
fact, many flavonoids have been shown to inhibit the oxidation of LDL
cholesterol particles and to reduce blood platelet "stickiness." Left
unchecked, these two natural processes can contribute to narrowed blood
vessels, the most common cause of heart attack.
Senior member of the SAB and world renowned cancer scientist Dr. Arthur
Furst says,
- Air pollution can rob skin of an
important vitamin, aggravating a variety of skin ailments common
to people in urban areas, according to a study released Tuesday.
The University of California at Berkeley study, which was
conducted on mice, concluded that ozone rapidly strips vitamin E
from the uppermost layer of skin. This vitamin is an important
component of healthy skin, the scientists said.
``This is not what we expected to find,'' Berkeley
researcher Jens Thiele said. ``It was very striking how readily
vitamin E was depleted.''
The finding may help to explain why urban living can
aggravate skin ailments such as dermatitis, which results in
itchy, red, inflamed and scaly skin, the researchers said.
The study was conducted in an ozone chamber on hairless
mice, a commonly used model for skin research. Based on the
results, the researchers said they believe similar changes occur
in human skin.
The university said the study was to be presented at an
annual meeting in Santa Barbara, California, of scientists
specializing in oxidants and antioxidants.
The Berkeley researchers examined a thin layer at the
surface of the skin called the ``stratum corneum,'' which is
found in both mice and humans and which prevents pollutants and
other chemicals from entering the body.
After exposure for two hours to ozone levels up to twice
those occurring at peak times in heavily polluted cities like
Mexico City and Los Angeles, vitamin E content in the stratum
corneum plunged by 25 percent, they found. After similar
exposures for six consecutive days, only a quarter of the
original vitamin E survived.
Although the ozone level used in the experiments was double
what might be encountered in the worst real-world conditions,
''the point is we only exposed the skin for two hours,'' Thiele
said. ``In the real world, it's really much more of a chronic
exposure.''
Ozone concentrations peak daily between noon and early
afternoon. Mexico City has the highest ozone levels in the
world, while Los Angeles leads the United States.
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble compound found in some plant oils
and the leaves of green vegetables. It also protects human skin
and has long been a folk remedy for skin ailments.
The Berkeley researchers said the depletion of vitamin E
could expose important skin fat molecules, called lipids, to air
pollution. Destruction of these lipids, which regulate the
movement of materials in and out of the skin, could aggravate
skin ailments that commonly afflict people in urban areas.
Thiele said it was also possible the breakdown of lipids
releases harmful chemicals that can aggravate skin problems. Is ozone always bad for you? See the article on Air Purification here
Most athletes realize the importance of a diet that is high in protein,
complex carbohydrates and water. But nutrition can also help get by the top
three roadblocks to optimal performance: oxidation, inflammation, and
weak immunity.
In much the same way that metal is subject to rust over time, our bodies
are subject to oxidative stress, primarily caused by "oxygen free radicals".
Athletes are particularly vulnerable because of their enormous output of
energy, and consumption of oxygen. Studies show that the average person's
body suffers the potentially damaging impact of 10,000 free radical "hits"
per cell, per day. Because athletic activity increases metabolism two to
three times, this number of "hits" could even triple for the competitive
athlete!
Carotenoids and flavonoids are phytonutrients that have proven to provide
antioxidant protection. Carotenoids are the color pigments in fruits and
vegetables like oranges, squash, and tomatoes. Flavonoids are one of the most potent of all the
antioxidant groups. (See Product and Ordering info)
Champion cyclist Glen Winkel, Ph.D. believes that "by maintaining a
dietary balance between Omega 6's(from vegetable oils) and Omega 3's(from
fish oils), we may be able to prevent inflammation associated with overuse
injuries, a type of injury familiar to the competitive athlete."
"Unfortunately", says Winkel, "the ratio of vegetable oils to fish oils in
the average American diet is roughly 15 to 1!" Salmon Oil in capsule form can fill
the dietary gap when it is not practical to consume a regular portion of fatty
fish, which has the amazing ability to both improve circulation and reduce inflammation.
A strong immune system can tolerate even sudden and significant changes
in stress levels. Both carotenoids and Vitamin C have been shown to help.
A USDA study completed in 1995 showed a 37% boost in
immune response in just 20 days using "Carotinoid Complex", 3 capsules daily.

In laboratory tests conducted by Southern Research Insitute and reported
by William M. shannon, Ph.D., head of the Microbiology-Virology Division,
grapefruit seed extract "...was effective in inactivating HSV-1
(herpes symplex virus type 1) after a 10 minute exposure at a 1:256 dilutions."
Against human influenza virus type A2/Aichi/2/68 in vitro, the MIC(minimum inhibitory concentration) for
GSE was the same, 1:256. Dr. Shannon reported, "The fact that GSE effectively inactivated both
HSV-1 and influenza A virus suggests that an EPA type virucidal assay might
demonstrate significant efficacy for this product."
In South America, Interlan, S.A. reports that grapefruit seed extract has
been tested effective against the measles virus.
The United States Dept. of Agriculture tested GSE and found it effective
against four animal viruses: Foot and Mouth Disease, African Swine fever,
Swine Vesicular Disease, and Avian influenza.
As to exactly what the viricidal possibilities are for GSE, only time will
tell. We do know that it has been acclaimed effective in the aforementioned
applications, and off the record, we have heard reports from many people who claim
GSE has cured or dramatically lessened symptoms of even the common cold and
flu viruses. So, given its efficacy as an antiprotozoan, we will be closely
GSE's effectiveness against these molecular parasites.
Many forms of dermatitis, poison oak, poison ivy, cysts and other
skin disorders are being effectively treated with grapefruit seed extract.
The healing antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral effects of this product
seem to promote the healing of almost any atypical skin condition.
The recommended application for most skin disorders is to mix GSE at about
a 1% concentration with other essential oils like chamomile and tea tree, and
applying from a spray bottle, leaving on the skin.
Alternatively, 2 to 3 drops can be applied by fingertip to the wetted affected
area, leaving on for a few minutes, then rinsing thoroughly with cool water.
An even more concentrated application is often needed for cysts and warts with
doctors recommending direct application of a single drop on the cyst or wart
and covering with a bandaid after the GSE is allowed to be absorbed.
Cancer Growth Inhibited 90% by GNLD Flavonoids
In a new in vitro study, cancer researchers at the Southern
Research Institute in Birmingham, AL, found that extracts of flavonoid-rich
fruits and vegetables inhibited the growth of cancer cells by more than 90%!
Powerful Anti-Cancer Weapons
Flavonoid-rich fruits and vegies help protect from cancer at all stages of
development, from initiation of a single carcinogen to the spread of tumors.

"These new test results provide further supporting data that flavonoid compounds
function as powerful antioxidants, and as shown here in an in vitro
system, effectively inhibit the growth of human cancer cells," says Dr.
Gordon Newell, SAB member.
Reduces risk of Heart Disease
Population studies from around the world show that diets high in flavonoids may reduce the
risk of heart attack.
Defends Against Stroke
In the fifteen year Zutphen study from the Netherlands, researchers demonstrated
that the more flavonoids these participants consumed, the lower their risk
of stroke.
"A single source of flavonoids cannot give total protection. Our whole-food
concept also means protecting the whole body." Neolife's Flavonoid Complex
delivers the powerful protection of the broad spectrum found in beets,
berries, grapefruit, red and black grapes, green tea, kale, lemons, and oranges.

Inflammation-Don't Let It Freeze You Up!
Rest, ice, compression, elevation - they are four of the most familiar
words in the athlete's vocabulary and the most widely known ways to deal

before treatment was necessary?
Immunity - Boost Yours to Boost Your Competitive Edge
You can't afford to get sick. But it's not uncommon for athletes to fall
sick at the beginning of the "season". "It's like the difference between
turning on the air conditioning in your car on a straightaway and turning
on the AC when you're driving uphill towing a huge trailer!", says Winkel.

Ten Supplements for a Strong Immune System
Vitamin C
contributes to general immune support and has
possible antiviral effects. Vitamin C levels have bee found to be
compromised when the body deals with health problems such as surgery, stress,
progressive disease, colds and other viral infections.
Vitamin E
is an essential vitamin most useful for its antioxidant
effects on oxidized fats and cholesterol - two suspected contributors to
heart disease. Without adequate vitamin E, cell membranes and DNA are
less protected from free-radical damage.
Selenium
supports the body's detoxification system. It's
particularly good for chemical irritants such as heavy metals. As an
antioxidant, selenium, in the form of selenocysteine, prevents or slows
the biochemical aging process of tissue degeneration and hardening.
This antioxidant effect may also benefit the cardiovascular system and
protect against cancer. More on selenium here.
Vitamin A
supports normal cell reproduction and reduces infection
rate. An antioxidant also, vitamin A helps protect the body from the irritating
effects of smoke and other pollutants. It may also be helpful in preventing problems
such as ulcers, atherosclerosis, stroke, and high blood pressure.
Beta-carotene
converts to vitamin A in the body, yet has different
antioxidant effect than vitamin A. Beta-carotene has been shown to improve
immune response by stimulating T-helper cell activity. It appears to prevent the
development of cancer, and a number of studies have shown reduced lung and
colon cancer rates in people with higher beta-carotene intakes. Much of the
beta-carotene found in supplements today is synthetic in nature, and much
reduced in biological activity. It is believed that may account for one
study which showed an increase in lung cancer among men supplementing with
beta-carotene. It is also known now that beta-carotene is just one of literally
hundreds of "carotinoids", some of which have even more potent anti-cancer
properties, such as lycopene, a carotinoid found in abundance in tomatoes,
both cooked and raw, and in Neolife's Carotinoid
Complex.
Zinc
is vital to a broad range of immune-system functions. It
supports the functions of T-cells and B-cells, parts of the immune system that
help the body fight infection and produce antibodies. Zinc can improve
antibody response to vaccines and cell-mediated immunity by helping
regulate the function white blood cells. A somewhat higher amount of zinnc has
caused an increase in production of T-lymphocytes - important agents in
cell-mediated immunity. Zinc also helps healing and reduces infection.
In a recent study showing reduced cold symptoms with the use of zinc losenges,
researchers concluded the good results were likely the result of the
interruption of viral binding sites.
Echinacea angustifolia
dubbed the "king of blood purifiers", is
used to treat infections and to purify the blood and lymph system.
Recent experiements have shown that echinacea can increase white blood cell counts
and thus our ability fight bacteria and viruses. It also stimulates important
T-lymphocyte activity, which spurs the lymphatic system to clear wastes.
More news on Echinacea at this link.
Acidophilus
is a beneficial bacteria that inhabits the human digestive
tract. It is best known for reintroducing friendly bacteria into the colon
to assure the return of normal bodily functions after a course of antibiotic drugs.
It itself acts as a mild antibiotic, possibly by the release of peroxides as
a waste material for one reason, and thus with regular use can replace
harmful bacteria in the colon(or vaginal tract in women plagued with yeast
infections). On this subject, please go to
Grapefruit Seed Extract for some very useful information.
Co-Q10
made in the body, works along with enzymes to support the
body's bioenergetic functions. It appears to be a mild immune system
stimulant and has been shown to help heart function by enhancing pumping action
and electrical function as well as helping lower blood pressure. It may
also improve energy production in muscle cells.
Thymus glandulars
are derived from animal glands and are thought
to supply basic nutrients such as amino acids, oils and vitamins. Evidence
from radoisotope studies suggests that glands, when eaten, do in fact get to
human glands and influence them. Thymus glandulars in particular are
important to immunological function because they contain the active hormone
thymosin, which helps stimulate T-lymphocyte production and activity in the
body.
