Charaka the Hippocrates of Ayurvedic medicine describes Tribulus as being a diuretic, aphrodisiac, tonic and rejuvenating herb with the ability to build lean muscle and strength. The fruit and root of Tribulus contain pharmacologically important metabolites like flavonoids, alkaloids and glycosides. These active components have a stimulating effect on the immune, sexual and reproductive systems. In 1847 a scientist named Fritzsche isolated a chemical from the plant called Peganum Harmala that he called Harmine. Peganum Harmala was used in Arabic medicine as a stimulant and aphrodisiac. Harmine is one of the main active components of Tribulus Terrestris.
A recent Turkish study, conducted in 1998 at the Department of Pharmacology at Erciyes University, demonstrated that the saponins found in Tribulus works as a diuretic, protects against colic pains, and works well at controlling high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.
Another study done in the same year, conducted in Japan at the Toyama Medical University, demonstrated that Tribulusamine A1 and B2 (two new lignanamides recently found in Tribulus) acted as liver protectants and prevented apoptosis (cell death) in certain instances.
In Vietnam and China it has been used as a styptic, in the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage and gastro intestinal bleeding and in South Africa as a remedy for inflammation and arthritis.
The people of Bulgaria used Tribulus Terrestris to treat infertility and as a sexual enhancer. Tribulus has also been shown to reduce high blood pressure, as well as sodium and fluid retention.
