Water Distiller Recommendations For Dental Offices

Water Distiller Recommendations For Dental Offices

"What distiller should we choose?"

That is a common question from our Dental office customers. So we have compiled some of the more common answers and more useful tips that will help you choose the right distiller for your office.

Which distiller is best for our office?

All of our countertop distillers and automatic distillers will produce water that is pure enough to be suitable for your equipment, such as autoclaves. The counter top distillers are suitable if you use 1-2 gallons a day, anymore and you will need to add additional units or step up to an automatics distiller that is connected directly to a water source.

What maintenance is involved?

Very little. The most important thing is maintaining the boil chamber where the minerals and other contaminants are collected. This is what you don't want in your equipment and therefore you want to clean out the impurities regularly which is quite easy with both the countertop and automatics distillers.

Do distillers require filters?

This is a very important point for dental offices. Distillers used at dental offices to produce distilled water for equipment Should Not use post filters even when supplied with a distillers. Why? Post filters such as supplied with our countertop units should only be used for drinking water. Your equipment requires pure water which means the less particles the better. A post filter, which is in most cases activated charcoal, contributes to the overall taste of distilled water and assist in the removal of VOCs. However, a post filter will actually introduce small particles (harmless to humans) back into the water and therefore should not be used when distilling water for equipment. We have had plenty of dental offices use them with no ill effect to their equipment because it is a small mount of particles reintroduced, but it is not necessary or recommended and will save you money on filters in the long run.

How much does it cost to operate and maintain?

The average cost of electricity per gallon is 20-30 cents per gallon depending on your local utility service. The only other cost is if you need a de-scaler to clean and maintain the unit. A 2lb residue cleaner is currently $23.95 and for most this can last a year. So cost of operation and maintenance is small in comparison to buying, lugging and dealing with bottles purchased elsewhere.
